Sammaekjong, King Jinheung of Silla, has been living in hiding for his own safety. A young woman named Ah-ro has the ability to help him fall asleep.

Sammaekjong visits Ah-ro to ask her to continue telling her story until he falls asleep. Moo-myung saves Mak-moon from a nobleman.

The town is abuzz with the news of the Queen Mother's announcement. Ah-ro is entrusted to look for beautiful young men suitable of becoming Hwarang.

Sammaekjong visits Ah-ro at her house. Not realizing who he is, Ah-ro talks about how she sympathizes with the king who stays hidden from the world.

Ban-ryu follows Young-shil's orders to become a Hwarang. Sun-woo also decides to become a Hwarang in order to protect Ah-ro.

As Queen Ji-so gazes triumphantly upon the Hwarang on the day of the appointing ceremony, she notices that Ahn-ji's son Sun-woo is missing.

Sun-woo, Ji-dwi, Soo-ho, Ban-ryu and Yeo-wool have started living together. Other Hwarang gossip about hell breaking loose in their room.

Ah-ro runs back to the doctor's office in a hurry when she hears Sun-woo approaching. Sun-woo hits Ji-dwi and tells him to stay away from his sister.

It is the anniversary of the day Ah-ro's mother passed away. Sun-woo decides to sneak out and go to Ah-ro's house while the guards are preoccupied.

Sun-woo swears to pay the king back after learning why Mak-moon was killed. Sun-woo and Mak-moon's foster father Woo-reuk comes to teach the Hwarang.

Ban-ryu feels conflicted as the Hwarang dedicate themselves to their lessons. Princess Sook-myung demonstrates her skills to the Hwarang.

The Hwarang welcome their helpers, the Nando. Han-sung has conflicting feelings about his older brother Dan-se being assigned to Sun-woo.

Sun-woo confesses to Ah-ro why he had been avoiding her. Young-shil learns that one of the Hwarang lost a bracelet with the king's emblem on it.

People suspect that Sun-woo may be the king. Sun-woo continues to search for the king that is responsible for the death of his best friend.

Sun-woo draws his sword against Ji-dwi and demands to know whether or not he is the king. Ah-ro gets hurt while trying to protect Ji-dwi.

Some of the Hwarang head off to escort Princess Sook-myung to Nambuyeo. Ah-ro suspects that Sun-woo volunteered himself for the princess.

The Hwarang get thrown into a cell while trying to rescue Ah-ro from captivity. Chang learns that one of the Hwarang is the king of Silla.

Sun-woo and Chang enter a deadly one-on-one duel as representatives of the kingdoms of Silla and Nambuyeo.

Sun-woo and Ah-ro spend quality time together after returning to Silla. Ji-dwi feels hopelessly frustrated about his situation.

Ji-dwi reveals his identity after sneaking into Young-shil's bedroom to get his bracelet back. The Hwarang believe that Sun-woo is King Jinheung.

Queen Ji-so decides to make Ah-ro a Wonhwa. Despite being threatened with death, Ah-ro shows her determination to survive.

The Hwarang are stunned at the tragic turn of events. Sun-woo stops Dan-se from taking drastic action and hands him a letter that Han-sung wrote.

A song spreads throughout the capital that compares Ji-dwi and Sun-woo. Young-shil declares his intention to change who is king.

Young-shil schemes to control Silla by putting Sun-woo on the throne. Sun-woo and the Hwarang enter the throne room to make a declaration.
