Geostorm is a science-fiction disaster film that follows Jake Lawson, a satellite designer who creates a system of climate-controlling satellites called "Dutch Boy." After the system neutralizes a typhoon in Shanghai, Jake is replaced by his brother Max, who works under US Secretary of State Leonard Dekkom. Three years later, a UN team discovers a frozen village in the Registan Desert and an Indian engineer working on the International Climate Space Station (ICSS) is killed in a supposed accident. Jake is convinced to go to the ICSS to investigate, suspecting a traitor on board. Examining the data leads to the discovery of a computer virus that has been introduced, causing the malfunctions in the satellites and wiping out the login access of key senior people.
Suspecting Palma is using Dutch Boy as a weapon, Jake tells Max he needs to reboot the system to eliminate the virus, requiring the kill code held by Palma. The ICSS staff neutralizes malfunctioning satellites by deliberately knocking them offline via collisions with replacement ones. Back on Earth, Cheng Long discovers that he and Max have lost login access and warns Max of a global cataclysm known as a "Geostorm" if the malfunction continues.
Max enlists his girlfriend, Secret Service agent Sarah Wilson, to acquire the code. During this time, the ICSS team loses control of all operations as the virus initiates the self-destruct program. More disasters strike around the world, and Jake realizes Duncan is the traitor who masterminded Habib's death and created the storms on Dekkom's orders. With Duncan's help, Dekkom plans to eliminate the other elected officials in America's line of succession, allowing him to dominate the world while eliminating America's enemies. Max and Sarah must race against time to stop the Geostorm and save the world.
Geostorm was directed by Dean Devlin, who also co-wrote and co-produced the film. It marked his feature film directorial debut, and he drew inspiration from his daughter's question about whether a machine could be built to fix climate change. Paul Guyot contributed to the script, particularly in developing the brother dynamics between the two main characters.
The film stars Gerard Butler, Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Ed Harris, and Andy García. Principal photography began in October 2014 in New Orleans, Louisiana, with an initial budget of $82 million. The production faced some setbacks, including poor test screenings, which led to $15 million reshoots in December 2016 under the guidance of executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer, writer Laeta Kalogridis, and new director Danny Cannon.
Geostorm was released in October 2017 and heavily underperformed at the box office, grossing only $221.6 million worldwide against its budget of $120-130 million. The film was panned by critics, who criticized its storytelling and visual effects. Despite the negative reception, Geostorm has gained a cult following among fans of disaster films and sci-fi thrillers.
One interesting aspect of the creation of Geostorm is that it is the only co-production between Skydance Media and Warner Bros. Pictures to date. The film's premise of satellites controlling the world's weather also reflects a growing interest in climate change and its potential impacts on the planet. While the film may not have been a critical or financial success, it remains a notable example of the disaster film genre.
Gerard Butler stars as Jake Lawson, the satellite designer who creates the "Dutch Boy" system to control the world's weather. Jake is determined to save the world from the Geostorm that threatens to destroy it. Butler is best known for his roles in action films like 300, Olympus Has Fallen, and London Has Fallen.
Jim Sturgess plays Max Lawson, Jake's younger brother who takes over as chief architect of Dutch Boy. Max works under US Secretary of State Leonard Dekkom and tries to uncover the truth behind the malfunctioning satellites. Sturgess is known for his roles in Across the Universe, Cloud Atlas, and the TV series Feed the Beast.
Abbie Cornish stars as Secret Service agent Sarah Wilson, Max's girlfriend who helps him acquire the kill code to stop the Geostorm. Cornish is best known for her roles in Bright Star, Sucker Punch, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Ed Harris plays US Secretary of State Leonard Dekkom, who oversees the Dutch Boy system and suspects Jake of using it as a weapon. Harris is a veteran actor known for his roles in The Truman Show, A Beautiful Mind, and Westworld.
Andy García stars as US President Andrew Palma, who is convinced by Max to conduct an investigation into the Dutch Boy system. García is best known for his roles in The Godfather Part III, Ocean's Eleven, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.
Geostorm also features supporting performances from actors such as Alexandra Maria Lara, Daniel Wu, and Zazie Beetz.
Geostorm is a classic example of a disaster film that tries to do too much and ends up falling short. While it has an intriguing premise and talented cast, the storytelling and visual effects don't quite live up to the hype. The film received negative reviews from critics, many of whom criticized its clichéd plot and lack of originality.
However, if you're a fan of disaster films and sci-fi thrillers, Geostorm may still be worth a watch. The film has its share of exciting action sequences and suspenseful moments, and the performances from the main cast are solid. Gerard Butler and Jim Sturgess have good chemistry as the Lawson brothers, and Ed Harris and Andy García add gravitas as the political figures caught up in the chaos.
Despite its flaws, Geostorm has gained a cult following among fans of the genre. If you're willing to overlook its shortcomings and enjoy it for what it is, you may find yourself entertained by this stormy disaster film.
