Plot of American History X

American History X is a powerful drama that follows the story of two brothers, Derek and Danny, who become involved in the white power skinhead and neo-Nazi movements in Los Angeles. The film begins with Danny antagonizing his Jewish history teacher by choosing to write a civil rights essay on Mein Kampf. As a result, Danny is given a new assignment to write a paper on his older brother Derek, who is a former neo-Nazi leader just released from prison.

The story then flashes back to the events that led to Derek's imprisonment. After their father, a firefighter, is killed by a black narcotics dealer, Derek becomes a violent white supremacist and forms his own gang called the Disciples of Christ (D.O.C.). Derek's path of hatred leads him to prison, where he is forced to confront his own beliefs and prejudices. Meanwhile, Danny is being indoctrinated into the same violent ideology by Derek's former associates.

When Derek is released from prison, he tries to prevent Danny from following in his footsteps and becoming a neo-Nazi. However, Danny is already deeply involved with the D.O.C. and their leader Cameron, who betrayed Derek years ago. As tensions rise between Derek and the D.O.C., the film builds to a dramatic and heart-wrenching conclusion.

American History X is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged film that explores the dangers of hate and the power of redemption. Through the story of Derek and Danny, viewers are forced to confront their own beliefs and biases and consider the impact of their actions on others.

The Production of American History X

American History X was directed by Tony Kaye in his feature directorial debut and written by David McKenna. The film stars Edward Norton and Edward Furlong in the lead roles, with an impressive supporting cast including Fairuza Balk, Stacy Keach, Elliott Gould, Avery Brooks, Ethan Suplee, and Beverly D'Angelo.

The script for American History X was based on McKenna's own childhood and experiences growing up in San Diego. He sold the script to New Line Cinema, which was impressed by the writing and green-lit the project. Budgeted at $20 million, filming took place in 1997.

However, before the film's release, Kaye and the film studio were in disagreements about the final cut of the film. The final version was longer than Kaye intended, which resulted in him publicly disowning the film and removing his name from the credits, thus negatively affecting his directing career. Despite this setback, American History X was critically praised, with Norton and Furlong's performances and the film's powerful message drawing acclaim. Norton received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

The film has also been used for educational purposes in the United States and in other countries, making it a cultural touchstone for discussions about race, hate, and redemption. American History X is an unforgettable film that continues to resonate with audiences today.
