Plot Summary of Rambo

Set during the political upheavals of the Saffron Revolution in Burma, Rambo follows the story of John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone), a former Green Beret and Vietnam War veteran who is living in Thailand, making a living as a snake catcher and boat driver. Rambo is approached by a group of missionaries who ask him to take them up the Salween River into Burma on a humanitarian mission. Initially resistant, Rambo agrees when he is convinced by one of the missionaries' fiancée, Sarah Miller (Julie Benz).

During the journey, the group is stopped by pirates, resulting in a confrontation that leaves Rambo with no choice but to kill them. When they reach their destination, they find the village destroyed and the inhabitants massacred by the Burmese army. The missionaries are taken hostage, and Rambo is once again called upon to help. He joins a team of mercenaries who are hired to rescue the hostages, but they are met with fierce resistance from the Burmese army.

The plot of Rambo is filled with intense action sequences and brutal violence, as Rambo and the mercenaries fight to save the hostages from the clutches of the Burmese army. Along the way, they encounter a group of Karen rebels who join their fight against the army. Despite the overwhelming odds, Rambo and his team are determined to succeed in their mission and save the innocent victims from the horrors of war.

The Production of Rambo

Rambo is the fourth installment in the Rambo franchise and was directed by its star, Sylvester Stallone. Stallone also co-wrote the screenplay with Art Monterastelli. The film was produced by Avi Lerner, John Thompson, and Kevin King Templeton, and distributed by Lionsgate Films and The Weinstein Company.

One of the distinctive aspects of Rambo is its use of practical effects and stunts. Stallone, known for his dedication to physical training and performance, performed many of his own stunts in the film, including the scene where he jumps from a moving vehicle. The film also features a significant amount of graphic violence, which received criticism from some reviewers and audiences.

Rambo was filmed in Thailand, Mexico, and the United States, with the majority of the outdoor scenes filmed in Thailand. The production faced some challenges during filming, including a protest by the Karen National Liberation Army, who were unhappy with the portrayal of their people in the film.

Upon its release, Rambo received mixed reviews, with praise for Stallone's direction and performance, as well as the action sequences and musical score. However, the film was criticized for its plot, excessive violence, and political commentary. Despite the mixed response, Rambo was a commercial success, grossing over $113 million worldwide against a production budget of $47.5-50 million.

Cast of Rambo

Sylvester Stallone stars as John Rambo, a former Green Beret and Vietnam War veteran. Stallone also directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay. He is best known for his work in the Rocky and Rambo franchises, as well as his roles in The Expendables, Demolition Man, and Creed.

Julie Benz plays Sarah Miller, the fiancée of one of the missionaries and a driving force behind Rambo's decision to help. Benz is known for her roles in TV shows such as Dexter and Defiance, as well as films including Jawbreaker and Punisher: War Zone.

Matthew Marsden portrays School Boy, one of the mercenaries hired to rescue the missionaries. Marsden has appeared in films such as Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Resident Evil: Extinction, and Black Hawk Down.

Graham McTavish plays Lewis, the former SAS soldier who leads the group of mercenaries. McTavish is known for his roles in TV shows such as Outlander and Preacher, as well as films including The Hobbit trilogy and Creed.

Rey Gallegos portrays En-Joo, one of the mercenaries who accompanies Rambo on the rescue mission. Gallegos has appeared in films such as American Sniper, Harsh Times, and Bad Boys II.

Ken Howard plays Arthur Marsh, the pastor of the missionaries' church who hires Rambo and the mercenaries to rescue the hostages. Howard is known for his roles in TV shows such as The White Shadow and 30 Rock, as well as films including Michael Clayton and In Her Shoes.

Rambo: Blood, Violence, and Little Else

Rambo is a movie that delivers on its promise of blood and violence, but little else. While the action scenes are undeniably impressive, the plot is thin and the characters are one-dimensional. It's a movie that relies on shock value rather than substance, and as such, it fails to leave a lasting impression.

Despite the mixed critical reception, some fans of the franchise may enjoy the film for its over-the-top action and Stallone's return to the role that made him famous. However, for those looking for a deeper and more thought-provoking experience, Rambo is unlikely to satisfy.

Overall, Rambo is a movie that falls short of its potential. While it may appeal to fans of the franchise or those looking for mindless action, it ultimately fails to deliver a compelling story or well-developed characters. For those who still want to give it a watch or stream it, consider using ExpressVPN to access it on Netflix in Canada and unlock many more movies and shows.
